Great Labor Slogans

[ 14 ] June 12, 2012 | Erik Loomis

Two great labor slogans here.

First, we have this campaign from UNITE-HERE and the LGBT community to get same-sex couples to not stay in non-union hotels.

We then have this from Palermo’s frozen pizza workers in Milwaukee. The Palermo workers have formed an independent union and have gone on strike over worker safety issues.

If we weigh the money behind each campaign equally (UNITE-HERE resources far outweigh an independent union of immigrants), I’d have to say that both are pretty equally fantastic.

I love the pizza cutter in the clenched fist. I think that should replace the standard union symbol even for non-pizza unions. (my grad student union put a pencil in the fist: much less cool.)

That pizza cutter fist is my favorite since this one (this is the local that covers Disney World).

    Better, closer.

But LGBT + Labor (+Women+Immigrants+Whatever) is much closer to a party or a movement than a union. A union, by definition, is exclusive.

So why the hell don’t we just start a New Internationale? Call it the Nth.

    Or Occupy.

I only just saw this post. Thanks, Erik, for mentioning the Palermo’s strike (they did come up with a pretty awesome logo). I know this is a dead thread and probably no one will read this, but I wanted to say a little more about what’s happening. The strike is still going on, but the workers only need to hang on for a couple more weeks until they can take a vote on July 6.

People around the state have been lending a hand to try to keep them going. We’ve been collecting supplies for both people on the picket line (it’s been really hot and rain free, so water, sunscreen, and umbrellas are vital) and their families (nonperishable food, toiletries, diapers, etc.). My state assembly rep., Mark Pocan, who runs a union print shop and is a union member himself, took two carloads of supplies from Madison there this week. The labor temple in Madison is also taking collections, and local unions are doing their part as well.

The Nuns on the Bus visited there this week, and people from management actually came out to talk to them; the pictures of Sister Simone talking to the managers are priceless — she was not buying what they were selling.

There’s a Facebook page for info on what’s going on; there’s a petition calling on Palermo’s to stop harassing the workers; and there’s a strike fund if anyone wants to donate. Again, they only need to hold out for little while longer and then they get to the next stage of having an official, NLRB sanctioned vote.
