The War (On Some Classes of People Who Use Some) Drugs: Still Going Strong!

These words — “significant reforms aimed at treating drug addiction as a chronic disease instead of a ‘moral’ failure,” inter alia — sure sound nice.   The problem is that  the policy consequences flowing from these words have been nonexistent.  As far as drug policy is concerned Bush might as well still be in the White House.

Nobody’s more contemptuous of lazy “Bush/Gorism” than me, but the drug war is one policy area where the differences between the parties are too trivial to be worthy of discussion.  And certainly, rhetoric about how things are changing is of no value without actual policy changes.
