Say what you will about Sarah Palin, she’s running what appears to be a very profitable grift. Newt seems to have conned himself:

When asked about the debt his campaign has accrued, Gingrich admitted that the campaign had spent almost $4.5 million more than they’d brought in. “It’s hard. No, we’re not going to go broke,” he said. Has he dipped into personal funds? “No, not — well, a little bit, but not dramatically,” he said. He blamed Florida, a big state with an expensive media market, for his campaign owing more than he had hoped. But he explained that these things are not uncommon, adding that in these situations, you talk to people, work things out, and spend the next few years raising money.

Despite the fact he’s what passes in Republican circles for an intellectual and has made a career running against the Lamestream Media, at some point his campaign stopped becoming profit-taking and he actually seemed convinced by media narratives that he was a Real Contender and in this age of the intarwebs who says you need money and campaign organization to win a state like Florida? There are few things more pathetic than con man who also cons himself, but if it involves Newt it’s also hilarious.
