Well, That’s One Solution to the Immigration Non-Problem

[ 32 ] March 16, 2011 |

When I first saw this, I briefly thought that I had wandered into the Onion by mistake.  Kansas state rep Virgil Peck (R, of course) suggested that the “immigration problem” could be solved with a method similar to that proposed for feral hogs in the very same state legislature: execution by helicopter.  When the story was elaborated upon at TPM, I took it seriously — this is the sort of thing that can’t be made up.  Peck even offered a response:

Asked about his comment, Peck was unapologetic. “I was just speaking like a southeast Kansas person,” he said.  He said most of his constituents are extremely upset with illegal immigration and the state and federal government response.

Because Kansas suffers from a crippling number of illegal immigrants.  At an estimated 47,000, if banded together they could almost fill the Kansas Jayhawks Memorial Stadium.  Of course, what Peck and his ilk are likely more concerned about is this mass of immigrants descending upon historic Lawrence-Dumont stadium in Wichita, capacity 6400, home to the Wichita Wingnuts baseball club.

Yes, the Wichita Wingnuts.  Peck’s home town of Tyro is only about 130 miles from Wichita; he might even be a fan.

Lansing, Michigan, also the scene of recent right wing craziness, has the Lugnuts for a minor league team

  2. Stag Party Palin says:

Dumb as a bag of hammers and Proud Of It! Sooo-eee!

But, if you look closely, the team fight song is named after a famous novel by Stendahl, with the words reversed. Fo shizzle.

  3. witless chum says:

Now, all you darn liberal make sure not accuse this particular conservative who suggested shooting people from helicopters of using violent rhetoric.

Such discussions are uncivil in and of themselves and deeply hurt conservative butts.

    • David W. says:

The violence isn’t metaphorical in Peck’s case. He’s literally for shooting illegal immigrants from helicopters like feral hogs. That Peck later claimed it’s a common sentiment in southeastern Kansas doesn’t change that fact.

      • witless chum says:

And no one at all is surprised by this.

It struck me that a statement such as Peck’s about his part of Kansas would no doubt be greeted with great umbrage if some big-city liberal pinko said it.

  4. James E Powell says:

Any ‘illegal’ immigrants in southeast Kansas are almost certain to be employed by a ‘southeast Kansas person’ who knows that said immigrants cannot be employed legally. Despite being ‘extremely upset’ about illegal immigration, such southeast Kansas persons cannot resist the profits to be gained from using workers with low wages and no rights.

    • Speaking as someone who married into SEK (no relation to the blogger of the same ‘nym) and then carpetbagged his way to a job here

      • but who hasn’t quite mastered the comment system….

There’s a thriving Mexican immigrant community around here – judging by the stores and to some extent my students – whose legal status appears to be of no concern whatsoever to anyone.

Rep. Peck is from Tyro, apparently, not my portion of SEK, but I’ve spent plenty of time in my in-laws hometown of Coffeyville, and they don’t seem the “Greatest Game” types over there, either, at least not to me.

  5. Hey, don’t dump on the Wingnuts! They play a good game. All us Wichitans who read LGM (which, on the basis of recent voting patterns, is likely to be…well, maybe about eight) take great offense at such a cheap shot.

  6. wengler says:

This is a crazy idea now, but with the accelerated calendar of crazification to normalization, I’d say this is going to be a mainstream Republican value in about 3 years.

    Gotta blame and kill someone.

  7. Warren Terra says:

This scheme rather does beg the question of how you determine someone’s immigration status through a rifle scope from a helicopter – although not quite as much as it begs the question of whether he plans to shoot people crossing the Missouri border or the Oklahoma border.

    • Hogan says:

      Death to the Border Ruffians!

    • Matt says:

I’m sure Rep. Peck has a solution for that (with apologies to Full Metal Jacket):

If they’re brown and they run from the chopper, they’re illegals; if they’re brown and stand still, they must be WELL-DISCIPLINED illegals.

      • papa zita says:

Simpler than that, the wingnut view is: If they’re brown, shoot ‘em down.

It’s how wingnuts understand computers, their logic is similarly binary. Wingnut logic doesn’t scale up well, so the 4004 is about as far as they can get.

    • IM says:

Kill them all, god will know his own.

A tried and tested formula (if a bit french).

    • DrDick says:

Obviously an effort to strike back at the Copperheads! Much as I hate to admit it as a native Okie who grew up in NE Oklahoma just south of the KS border, they would probably be justified in shooting all those Okies trying to sneak in. The whole state seems to have gone insane in the 25 years since I left.

  8. Antonio Conselheiro says:

Wichita is the home of the Koch Brothers, Dennis Rader (the BTK Killer), and Scott Roeder (who killed Dr. George Tiller).

  9. JohnR says:

Well, there you go again with your typical Liberal “reality-based” thinking. Look, you can think all you want about observing reality, judiciously if you will, but meanwhile those of us who understand things will be creating reality. See, here we have a problem – my people don’t have enough money. And we have a cause – illgeal immigrants are stealing our money. Put them together, and it’s obvious that illegal immigrants must be secretly lurking in Kansas like New York City (=liberal) bedbugs, sucking our lifeblood and other precious bodily fluids. Beck knows what’s _really_ real – after all, if the ideology demands it to be real, who are you to deny it? Who are you going to trust, after all – Beck or your eyes? I’m going with Beck. Like Palin and Bachmann, he sees things no Liberal will admit to!

They were, though. Their method worked, and ours didn’t. They transformed America in a horrifying way. Liberals are incapable of doing politics successfully because they think it’s like taking a test and getting right answers.

The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it.
