LGM Bowl Mania!

I have created an LGM Bowl Mania league.   Let’s remember; the default point arrangement has the BYU-UTEP game as the most important (35 point) game, and the UO-Auburn game as the least important (1 point).  This is to say that higher numbers indicate more confidence.  You’d think that the fine readership of LGM could manage this problem, but last year there were… issues.

Two blog items on Henry Kissinger and the Jews, both unreassonable in their own way: first, Christopher Hitchens in Slate: http://www.slate.com/id/2277744/, then Martin Peretz at his own blog: http://www.tnr.com/blog/the-spine/79838/kissinger-and-nixon-the-soviets-and-another-contemplated-genocide-the-jews

Hitchens is outraged by Kissinger saying this to Nixon: “The emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union is not an objective of American foreign policy. And if they put Jews into gas chambers in the Soviet Union, it is not an American concern. Maybe a humanitarian concern.” This strikes me as unfair, since (a) in 1973 it was obvious that the Soviet Union was not going to systematically murder its Jewish population and (b) Kissinger did actually try to encourage Jewish emigration. The reason it failed was that Henry Jackson needed to look tough against the Soviets to remedy for his utter lack of charm and charisma. He cared more about his presidential campaign that for the cause he was supposedly fighting for, and he ended up for asking more that the Soviet Union could give.

Peretz, commenting on the same quote, argues that Kissinger’s aid to Israel in the Yom Kippur war saved the Jews from a Soviet backed genocide. This is also absurd, since (a) Egypt and Syria were not trying to slaughter the Israelis (b) Egypt and Syria weren’t even trying to destroy the state of Israel, but simply take back the territory they lost in 1967 (c) they were acting on their own, not doing the Soviets’ bidding.
