I don’t know, John. A couple of years ago a book came out that documented the southern system of enforced bondage that lasted up to and beyond WWII, in which local judges signed over blacks to local whites for work, sometime for decades. This was based on baseless charges of some minor infraction or other. The blacks would be caught in an endless loop of never being able to pay off their so-called debt to society.

I still don’t like conflating Jim Crow with Apartheid. Apartheid was a far more extreme policy than Jim Crow ever was – South Africa already had a Jim Crow-like system in place before Apartheid was even instituted.

I understand hating on segregationist Southerners – they sucked. But using the term “Apartheid” to refer to the system obfuscates things.
