“âAuLook at the nature of this: small-town mayor, marrying the high school sweetheart âAi these are the kinds of things youâAod see in a Budweiser commercial as opposed to an Amstel Light commercial,âAu said South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. âAuShe wasnâAot born of political pedigree, and people like that.âAu”
Truly a sad state of affairs when someone thinks Amstel Lite is a classy beer…

I’m just old enough to remember when the Roman Hruska line of argument was considered a joke, as opposed to the basis for an entire political party.

  • Bloix

Chris Cilizza thinks the situation could be disasterous – for Democrats!
“Any sense that Democrats are pushing this idea will almost certainly turn both Sarah and Bristol Palin into sympathetic figures — and that spells trouble for her detractors.”

    Classy beers don’t advertise.

You know, saying everything is good for McCain is stupid. But saying there’s no way this could backfire is stupid too. Just because there’s a lot of bullshit charges of elitism against liberals doesn’t mean people aren’t going to feel sympathy when Palin and her family are condescended to as hicks. And judging by some of the liberal blogs, they won’t be wrong.

  • wengler

It looks like Palin is a petty small town mayor with a hick lifestyle.
Seriously, I know these writers spend all day with politicians, lobbyists, and media whores like themselves, but getting loaded and knocked up isn’t the most authentically American thing to do. It might be typical, but its not refreshing or comical to the other people it happens to either.
Do they really think people are going to say “Her daughter got knocked up! That happened to me too! I’ll vote for her!”? Of course this is the same shit logic that makes Obama un-American since the whole Kansan-Kenyan combos don’t happen everyday but I digress.
I know these reporters are lazy, but come on. I read the corporate media to laugh, not to bang my head against the wall.

Everyone can relate to using your political office for a personal vendetta, to help out your sister!
The comparison to Clinton’s “Troopergate” is just too much. Especially with these quotes from Palin’s attorney
“Our concern is that Hollis French turns into Ken Starr and uses public money to pursue a political vendetta rather than truly pursue an honest inquiry into an alleged ethics issue,” Van Flein said in an interview.
“We don’t have any sex. We don’t have any drugs. And there’s no blue dress. Nor are there any shady real estate deals here,” Van Flein said. “In the big picture, I think people are going to be disappointed that this is not a scandal.”

There is simply no way on God’s green earth that Adam Putnam, the less-than-esteemed Republican representative from Tampa, Florida, is in any way qualified to judge the “averageness” of life in Alaska.
This is the media fawning over Bush’s “manly characteristic”, version 2.0. They’re delighted by how rugged and tough Alaskans are, aided and abetted by chickenshit wingnuts from Florida, of all places.
It’s the very best Freidmanesque faux-empathy for the life they imagine the proles lead, but with an additional degree of separation. They’ve been having a human-interest-storygasm for several days now; it’s time to STFU and take a hard look at
policy, rather than pretending they’re all Jack freaking London.

The other Belgian beers are thoroughly embarassed by Amstel and Amstel Light, just like the rest of us are embarrased by the Republic party.

The most shocking part of this article is that it’s from the Politico and yet the byline isn’t Ben Smith. I guess he’s finally discovered the concept of the pen name.

  • Elsewhere, Richard Cohen isn’t quite as optimistic. Caligula and his horse get a mention.

  • Crap, wrong link. Here’s the right one.

The press is desperate to say something beyond the obvious to earn their big bucks.

He’s actually from Lakeland. Those of us living on the west side of the Hillsborough County – Polk County line would greatly appreciate it if you didn’t lump him in with the rest of us. We have enough problems already.

I’d actually like to see this Budweiser commercial, seeing as how every one I’ve seen in the last 10 years has been a “men will be men, and it’s your job to make them happy”.
    Oh, wait.

  • The Republicans are on the point of nailing down the hefty pitiful fuckup vote — the demographic the pollsters are afraid to poll, but which is estimates to be 40% of the electorate. Since they’ve already got the crazification 27% in the bag, they may be over the top already. The only question is how much overlap there is between the two groups.

  • McKingford

I fear for trash television. The Palin candidacy threatens to undermine the very basis of Springer & Maury.

  • Fauxmaxbaer

The emphasis needs to be kept off of Sarah Palin and her family. The real issue is the incompetence of the McCain campaign for putting her on the ticket in the first place.

  • Robert M.

See, you snooty 11th-District folks get all the luck. You don’t have to put up with Ronda Storms or Putnam. (Wife and I left Brandon about 10 weeks ago.)

  • mds

Yes, who in the American heartland hasn’t been charged with drunk driving, arranged a speedy marriage for their 17-year-old daughters, or advocated violent rebellion against the United States? Swing-voter soccer moms are swooning over how it’s just like looking in a mirror!
“Oh, the poor thing; I sympathize with her troubles, and therefore think she should be a heartbeat away from the Presidency.”
If this latest Politico fellatio of the McCain campaign is even close to accurate, humanity is doomed.

Truly a sad state of affairs when someone thinks Amstel Lite is a classy beer…
Cf. Old Milwaukee, aspiring to be an expensive beer like Budweiser.

  • Not sure what all the hub bub is about. Let me get this straight, Sen. McCain gets elected, becomes incapable of being President, Ms. Palin becomes President. Right?
Based on Mr. McCain’s history and temperment I am not sure how that is a bad thing. Really, can anything outside of Cheney be worse than McCain?
P.S. If you guys elect McCain, your country’s problems are even deeper than you think.
