He Fell. Onto Some Bullets.

[ 17 ] August 31, 2008 |

Try to make it sound plausible…

The owner of an internet site critical of the Russian authorities in the volatile region of Ingushetia has been shot dead in police custody. Magomed Yevloyev, owner of the ingushetiya.ru site, was a vocal critic of the region’s administration.

The Russian prosecutor’s office said an investigation into the death had been launched, Russia media report. A post on Yevloyev’s site says he was detained by police after landing at the airport of the main town, Nazran.

Shot himself twice in the back of the head, maybe?

I think that Russians have a deep historical memory of how to commit suicide like this.

  2. calipygian says:

Not a good place to be a journalist.
Anna Politskaya is only the most famous victim, but then there is Ivan Safranov who had written some stuff critical of the Bulava SLBM program.

He took a sick day to get his ulcer looked at, went to the market, bought some fruit and then decided to throw himself out a four story window.

  4. RepubAnon says:

This sort of thing has many historical precedents – kind of like the way Thomas Becket committed suicide by throwing himself backwards onto a couple of swords…

The cops of Saint Paul are pikers compared to these pro’s.

But Russia has the freest press in the world, with journalists who report on anything they want! All the Russian trolls in the Georgia thread told me so!

yeah, the rethugs are really earning their name in the twin cities.
    but. but but but.
what’s happening in russia is still orders of magnitude uglier than what’s happening in the u.s.
i’m not saying we should take any great consolation in that, or pat ourselves on the back, or let the st. paul police off the hook.
just that we should keep some perspective on the really, really bad stuff that is happening in russia.

  9. Mr. Trend says:

No, no – the answer is simple. You just have to turn to Latin American dictatorships of the 60s and 70s (and I’m sure elsewhere for your excuse.

    Questions for Radio Yerevan:
    * Q: Is it true that there is freedom of speech in the Soviet Union the same as there is the USA?
    * A: In principle, yes. In the USA, you can stand in front of the Washington Monument in Washington, DC, and yell, “Down with Reagan!”, and you will not be punished. In the Soviet Union, you can stand in the Red Square in Moscow and yell, “Down with Reagan!”, and you will not be punished.
    * Q: Is it true that the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky committed suicide?
    * A: Yes, it is true, and even the record of his very last words is preserved: “Don’t shoot, comrades.”

Wow, that joke is showing its age. And I don’t just mean because it mentions Reagan…

Q: Radio Yerevan, is it true that some jokes are historical artifacts?
    A: In principle, yes…

  13. Vadranor says:

    Calipygian,
The journalist murdered because of her reporting on Chechnya is Anna Politkovskaya, not Politskaya.

Georgia admits dropping cluster bombs – Acknowledges use of cluster bombs near Ossetian border tunnel
The South Ossetia conflict was the first time cluster bombs were deployed since the Lebanon war in 2006, when M85s were used extensively by isreal against Hizbullah.
is the M85 a usa cluster bomb or a russian cluster bomb ?
isreal gets its cluster bombs from usa – wonder where georgia got its cluster bombs from ??
is using cluster bombs a sign that your side is losing / getting its ass kicked ??

  15. Kilo says:

I was just on Anna’s Wiki page and the off-linked listing of journalists murdered in Russia this decade is ridiculously long.
I can remember when I used to quote “15 killed” when talking about that. Apparently that figure would have been current for about a month.

The shape and the knees were as symmetrically human as Nature may have designed them, and the feet, too, were human fit, but of monstrous proportions.
