I agree with publius: this reject and renounce game could be fun to watch. What will HRC say?

  • If by “fun” you mean “not fun”- why would I enjoy a gotcha about Hillary, who’s already had to go through the ringer concerning her own marriage in the context of adultery, now possibly having to publicly disavow the support of the now-toxic Spitzer, who just yesterday, almost any of us would have strongly supported regardless of his Hillary/Obama stance. Spitzer is not Farrakhan.
Spitzer has deeply disappointed me, but playing gotcha on top of it, I’m just not into. Spitzer should resign.

  • You know, she nailed Obama. He was trying to weasel and she nailed him. The other way round, you’d have celebrated his nous. And if this was the other way round, you’d be saying it’s no reflection, it’s nothing to do with him, blah blah.

You’re right that Spitzer is no Farrakhan, but come on: HRC went after Obama in a really dirty fashion on this one and they both came out looking silly. Why shouldn’t she take what she serves? Certainly she has seen a lot in terms of marital infidelity. I’m not asking her to bear her soul here, but given what she said to Obama, she should at least release a statement condemning Spitzer and rejecting his support. No?

  • what did hillary say? I don’t get it. What does this have to do with her. As democrats we have to be really, fucking, sorry that spitzer did something so stupid on our time and our dime and screwed us so royally. This isn’t a joking matter, bean, and I just don’t get any pleasure from seeing an important political figure brought low (by his own stupidity) and by seeing a powerful force against corporate malfeasance defenestrated. Its not like we have tons of governorships of new york or tons of great political figures like spitzer to waste.
even if he doesn’t resign,w hich I don’t think he should, he will be crippled in terms of law enforcement and negotiations with large corporations. this is terrible, and goes far beyond democratic primary politicking.

  • …apparently she is already denouncing or rejecting or something like that: http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2008/03/hillary-clinton-eliot-spitzer-hookers-endorsement.php.
And, aimai (no thanks for the scolding), I actually do think that though this is really awful, we can still have a bit of a sense of humor about it. That said, it’s not as if Spitzer was winning awards for the Dems before the bombshell today.

  • Darkrose

I’m more interested in seeing whether Clinton renounces and rejects Geraldine Ferraro’s statement that Obama’s the affirmative action candidate.

  • DocAmazing

I think he and Vitter should open a consulting service together.
Hey, just trying to optimize the synergies here.

SEX IS REASON FOR IMPEACHMENT, BUT WHAT ABOUT TREASON? Call Nancy Pelosi @1-202-225-0100 and DEMAND IMPEACHMENT. DC business hours only, call often, and spread it around.

  • My deal is that we can’t complain on one hand about the ridiculous “gotcha” mentality and then have fun with it on the other when it suits our purposes. I also wish every single thing in the world did not need to have Obama/Clinton ramifications. Encouraging Obama to tit for tat for the sake of some points does nothing to improve the horrible situation. None of what I have said enables, excuses or encourages real or perceived HRC behavior. I’m only talking about what we’re talking about right now.
The atmosphere has become so crazy (not so much over here, save the Yoo/Zuzu/flamewagon) that even to type the tiniest of critical comments I feel like I’m exposing myself to massive wrath and denunciation. I would really like it to be over, with as little kerosene thrown on the fire as possible, even in situations where some sort of “turnabout is fair play” rationale could reasonably be operating. Not every situation needs to go there.
    Said with much respect.

Agree with Darkrose. Who cares about this stuff? If HRC ends up winning I certainly don’t want her to have to answer for every sex scandal that may come up during her term.
But I would like to see her renounce Ferraro’s stupid race-baiting.

  • I’m really not sure how anyone’s who has been observing Spitzer’s 14 months as governor can refer to him as a great political figure. Forgetting this scandal, he’s been a crappy politician. Pissing off Sheldon Silver in your first two months as governor? Sheer genius! Well, sheer genius if you want the New York State Assembly to stand in the way of your agenda.
And his staffers using the state police to spy on Joe Bruno, making even your ally and successor as AG, Andrew Cuomo, have to scold you? Another brilliant political move.
Spitzer has some great positions on issues, but he’s turned out to be a poor politician. He didn’t make the adjustment from AG to governor well. An authoritarian streak has shown itself in his expectation that Assembly members and Senators were just going to do what he wanted because he’s Eliot Spitzer. And unsurprisingly, except clearly not to Spitzer, that isn’t what happened.

  • You know, she nailed Obama. He was trying to weasel and she nailed him.
No, he answered an irrelevant question straightforwardly and she used an utterly implausible semantic nitpick to try to give it another go-round. But it’s entertaining to watch the lengths you’ll go in your anti-Obama hackery.

Another vote for darkrose. This racist claptrap masquerading as feminism has got to go. It’s not as if it’s by accident: Ferraro said much the same thing on John Gibson’s (!) radio show about two weeks ago:

She said “let’s wait and see.” I think that’s probably the appropriate response right now. Spitzer’s not Farrhakan. And HRC’s can’t really denounce and reject someone for cheating on their spouse =P
Seriously though, it was a non-issue when she tried to pull the “denounce and reject” crap on Obama, and it’s even less of an issue now.
The default rule should be that candidates shouldn’t be held accountable for the mistake of those who endorse them. The situations with Spitzer and Reverend Wright are *not* analogous to the McCain/Hagee endorsement. This is ridiculous.

  • I absolutely agree with Adam. (Though maybe we can ask the NRCC if they’re going to call on Vitter to get out of politics anytime soon.)

  • bean – i can’t remember if i’ve asked this, but i was curious whether i potentially know you at school. i was tc’99, though i may be revealing my old age.

  • by know i meant knew

  • This isn’t a joking matter
    ???
    Of course it is.

The good thing is that this will distract the media from Obama/Clinton spats a little bit. The bad news is McCain’s shit (http://lefarkins.blogspot.com/2008/03/mccain-still-his-own-guy.html), will also get a powder.
