In honor of MLK day, David Ehrenstein has a great post on John F. Kennedy’s (The “F” stands for “It’s never the right time”) attempts to strenuously avoid any political risk on civil rights. Few things annoy me more than the liberal revisionism that lionizes Kennedy and demonizes Johnson. (Even with respect to Vietnam, JFK deserves more responsibility than he’s generally assigned.) That’s the funniest part of Oliver Stone’s JFK for me: LBJ wanted JFK killed because the latter was a dangerous radical. Oh, yeah, that makes perfect sense. I know Kennedy was a better orator and had more refined manners, but LBJ was a great progressive president; Kennedy wasn’t even close.
