William F. Buckley Jr. in the New York Times Magazine:

NYT:It’s not fair to blame the press. Some of your most inflammatory comments have been made in your essays and columns. In the 50’s, you famously claimed that whites were culturally superior to African-Americans.

WFB:The point I made about white cultural supremacy was sociological. It reflected, in a different but complementary context, the postulates of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

NYT:What are you talking about?

WFB:The call for the ”advancement” of colored people presupposes they are behind. Which they were, in 1958, by any standards of measurement.

Oh well, if the claims are only sociological! It strikes me, however, that the remedies proposed by the National Review were rather different; I don’t recall the NAACP favoring disenfranchisement or supporting segregation. This is sort of like Glenn Reynolds defending Bush on the FMA–except for the fact that Kerry opposes it and Bush supports it, their positions are exactly the same!

Speaking of the FMA, Buckley shares his fascinating vision of American constitutionalism:

NYT:Is there anything the Republican Party can do to regain its authority and luster?

WFB: It must abide by principles, salient among which at this moment is to pass the constitutional amendment to protect marriage.

NYT:Why do you oppose gay marriage?

WFB: It is extraconstitutional, marriage being a union between opposite sexes usually intending procreation.

“Extraconstitutional,” eh? Where exactly is this theory of marriage in the Constitution? Is divorce extraconstitutional? And if it’s already in the Constitution, why an amendment? But you have to give him credit–his vision of federalism has proven itself highly adaptable to supporting different forms of bigotry…
