Just back from the Farmer’s Market. Nader 04 campaigners were out in force, which is to say there were about five of them milling about. One approached me as I entered and asked who I plan to voter for.

Me: John Kerry.
Nader guy: May I ask why?
Me: Sure. I considered Nader, but I just don’t think I can bring myself to support a candidate who won’t unequivocally voice strong support for abortion rights?
Nader guy: Huh?
Me: Nader has made remarks about “fetuscide” which ought to make the pro-choice community quite nervous.
Nader guy: Where did you here that?

So I gave him the url for the blog and told him to look up Scott’s post. Now Nader avoids talking about icky stuff like abortion, so it’s not that surprising that his supporters don’t know what he says about it. (Still indefensible, though, especially if they consider themselves progressives). So when an entirely different Nader supporter approached me on my way out, I tried a different strategy.

Nader guy II: Have you considered voting for Ralph Nader this fall.
Me: Well, I thought about it. But I looked into some of the suggestions he’s made about tax policy, and I can’t support someone who won’t ask the upper middle class to pay their fair share.
NG II: Nader wants the rich to pay their fair share–it the two-party system that the rich use that allows them to avoid taxes
Me: If I make 95,000 dollars a year, do you think I should pay a little income tax?
NG II: Yes.
Me: Last week, in a conversation with Pat Buchanan, Nader said he didn’t think people who make under 100,000 should pay any taxes. People in the 75-100 thousand dollar a year range have about twice as much money as average americans, and by historical and global standards, they’re extraordinarily wealthy. The notion that these people should be exempt from contributing to the public defense and maintainence of our nation is absurd and offensive.
NG II: Pat Buchanan?

Nader people, if it’s not about Nader and it’s really about protesting the two party system, the lack of a pacifist candidate, whatever, then just say so. And if it really is about Nader, pay a bit more attention to what he actually says and who he actually cooperates with, and think long and hard about whether you really want to defend him.
